Disgraced Glitter expelled

HCM CITY — Former British rocker Gary Glitter was released from a prison in central Binh Thuan Province yesterday after serving almost three years for child sexual molestation.
He was expelled from Viet Nam the same day at the order of the Ho Chi Minh City Supreme People’s Court.
Glitter, 64, whose real name is Paul Francis Gadd, was arrested in Viet Nam on November 19, 2005 for committing obscene acts with adolescents in southern coastal Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province.
He was sentenced to three years in jail in March 2006 and had to pay 4,000 USD in compensation to the families of the victims.
On June 15, 2006, the HCM City Supreme People’s Court announced a supplementary punishment for Glitter to be deported from the country after finishing his jail term.
His sentence term was reduced by three months thanks to the Vietnamese State’s amnesty granted on the occasion of Tet (Lunar New Year) festival. While serving his term at the Thu Duc prison in southern Binh Thuan province, Gary Glitter was arranged to work at the health clinic of the prison.
Le Thanh Kinh, Glitter’s attorney, said his client was healthy and happy, though he had wanted to be sent to any other country except the
UK. — VNS Source: vietnamnews.
