Party leader talks of new countryside

LONG AN — Party General Secretary Nong Duc Manh has told authorities in the southern province of Long An that new residential and urban areas should be developed to serve as a base for a new countryside.
"Planning and designing residential areas that can cope with floods, and developing new urban areas alongside a series of industrial zones in Long An would serve as a good basis to form new models for the countryside, solving issues related to agriculture, farmers and rural areas for Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta provinces," he told the provincial Party Committee during his two-day working visit to the province which ended yesterday.
Manh said he was happy to see rapid socio-economic development in the province, compared to what he saw in Long An five years ago.
He noted that Long An’s economy had developed with a high annual growth rate of 13.1 per cent, its economic structure transformed following industrialisation and modernisation, and people’s living standards had continually improved.
The province’s annual industrial production and construction grew by 26 per cent, trade and services by 11.2 per cent, and tax collection increased by more than 30 per cent.
The province has attracted 125 foreign investment projects with a total registered capital of US$1.1 billion.
The Party leader expressed his appreciation for the province’s efforts in implementing a programme to build 165 new residential areas that involve a total 32,786 households, assuring that they would not be submerged during flood seasons.
He also asked provincial officials to implement the movement "Study and Follow Ho Chi Minh’s Morals" effectively and to pay more attention to improving residents’ living standards, to gradually narrow down the gap between the rich and the poor.
During his stay in the province, Manh visited Binh Phong Thanh Commune in Moc Hoa District, an isolated area in Dong Thap Muoi (Plain of Reeds). He also toured some industrial zones in Long An and presented gifts to Viet Nam Heroic Mothers in Duc Hoa and Moc Hoa districts.
