The charge was that by giving Google a portion of its search ads, Yahoo was essentially admitting defeat, heading down a slippery slope that would see Google increasingly overtake its business. But some say Google had already won the search game. Jim Lanzone, the former chief executive of Ask.com, argued that no industry realignment could break Google's commanding hold on the search market -- so this deal doesn't do much to tilt the balance in its favor....
Yahoo Ends Talks With Microsoft, Possibly Nears Google Deal
Yahoo has ended its talks with Microsoft about a deal narrower in scope than a full acquisition, Yahoo revealed on Thursday. Instead, the company is nearing an agreement with Google involving its search advertising business, The Wall Street Journal reported. Yahoo made no mention of such a deal in a statement it issued late Thursday afternoon. Such deals are typically announced either before U.S. financial markets open in the morning or after they close at 4 p.m. Eastern time. Yahoo said it has concluded talks with Microsoft because Microsoft was only interested in purchasing Yahoo's search business, not all of the company. Toshiba Plans 5TB Drives by 2013
New hard drive technology developed with Tohoku University could increase areal density to 1Tbit/sq inch and beyond. Toshiba and Tohoku University researchers have found a read head drive technology that could increase areal density five hundred percent. It could mean a 5TB 3.5-inch drive or a 1TB 2-5-inch drive, both by 2013. The highest areal density of any shipping disk drive product is 178.8Gbit/sq inch. The new technology could push this to 1Tbit/sq inch and beyond. The technology is called Nanocontact Magnetic Resistance (NC-MR). It increases the magneto-resistance of a drive head two fold meaning the head's ability to detect magnetic field changes is increased.
